FL studio, one of the most popular music production programs out there runs on pretty much any computer. The minimum system requirements can be met by most computers that are not already quite old. That being said, music production is a resource intensive task, and having a machine that can handle the workload is important if you want good results.

Best Laptops For FL Studio

Based on our research, our pick as the best laptop for FL studio is the MSI GS66 Stealth 10SGS-031 (#ad).

1. Best Laptop for FL studio – MSI GS66 Stealth 10SGS-031

One of my favorite laptops is the MSI GS66. This laptop offers raw power that few other laptops do. The only downside of this computer is that it is quite expensive, but if you want the best then you have to pay for it. MSI is also a brand that has a lot of experience with building high end gaming laptops, something that happens to also be good for music production.

There are many things that make this laptop an excellent choice. One of them is that it has the 10th generation i9-10980 which is one of the best CPU options you have. For tasks that require a lot of computations, which music production does, you want as many cores as you can get. This particular CPU has 8 cores which is very good for a laptop CPU, but you can get more if you get a desktop machine. If you have a look at the spec requirements you can see that the better your CPU the more FX and instruments you can run on FL studio, which tell you that the CPU is one of the most important parts in an FL studio laptop.

Another part that is important for music production in order to get the most out of it is a GPU. This laptop comes with one of the best laptop GPUs out there, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Max-Q. This GPU makes the laptop suitable not only for playing video games is also a goodlaptop for machine learning. The GPU is one area where this laptop really stands out from many of its competitors. If you want to save some money, then the GPU is one area where you will have to take a performance cut.

There is 32 GB of DDR4 RAM on this computer. 32 GB should be more than enough for FL studio for quite some time. You should be able to upgrade this in the future as this computers would last you a long time. Even though this laptop has a lot of it, RAM is not something that you should put too much consideration on. The reason is that you can quite easily upgrade the amount in a laptop. You can do it yourself if you know how, or you can have a computer expert do it

Overall the MSI GS66 is our pick as the best laptop for FL studio because of its power. If you want something cheaper then there are a few options for you below.

The laptop has a lot of other nice features that you should check out on Amazon. If this laptop fits in your budget then this might be the best laptop for FL studio.

2. Great for Music Production – Razor Blade 15

The Razer Blade 15 is one of the best laptops for FL studio. Even though it is a so called gaming laptop it actually looks quite good. The only thing giving it away is the logo on the back of the lid.

Although the CPU certainly is a selling point, most other laptops in this price range have the very same CPU, so it not something that is unique to the Razor. As with the powerful MSI, and all the others on this list, it comes with the Intel COre i7-9750.

Another important component when doing resource intensive tasks is a GPU. The GPU is not just for graphics, it is actually well suited for any task that requires a lot of computations. This laptop comes with the Nvidia RTX 2060 GPU which is not the best one on this list, but it is not very far away. If you simply want the most powerful GPU then you should have a look at the MSI, but you will be paying an extra premium for it. One of the reasons that the Razer blade is the top pick is because of its price. Although not cheap, it does offer a lot of good things for your buck. Razer actually used to offer a free producer license to FL studio back in 2018, but unfortunately that offer is not available any more. Still, Razer is a good brand for creators.

The third component that I consider very important for FL studio is the type and amount of RAM. The Razer comes with 16 GB RAM which is a decent amount. You could probably use up to 32 GB. The good thing is that you can quite easily upgrade the RAM yourself later if you feel that you need more. 16 GB is pretty standard in this price range and it is a good compromise to bring the price lower.

Overall this laptop is the top pick because it has a great CPU, good GPU, and good RAM. It also has other great components that are not directly as important for music production, but that make it a good overall laptop. While offering all that it does, it still comes in at a reasonable price for a high end laptop. There are more powerful options on this list but they also cost more.

The main reason to get this laptop over the MSI would be the price. You should check out the computer and what other things it has to offer on Amazon to see if there are any other features that might be important to you. For example, this laptop has a really good screen.

Gaming

3. Buget Laptop – Acer Predator Helios

If you can get over the fact that the Helios really looks like a gaming laptop then this is a good option. Gaming laptop features are also features that are good for music production. Music production is resource intensive and therefore you will benefit from the same powerful parts. One reason for getting this laptop over the Razor is because of its low price. But, a lower price also means weaker parts. Luckily it still has a great CPU.

The laptop has the same Intel Core i7-9750 CPU, which is one of the best you will find. As you will notice, a lot of expensive gaming laptops have this very CPU, so you should feel fairly comfortable that this is one of the best options for you. Laptop CPUs are not as powerful as what you can get for a desktop, but they are also cheaper. If you want the most powerful setup possible, then you might want to consider a desktop setup.

As mentioned before, the GPU is very important. One reason that this laptop is cheaper than the Razor is that the GPU that it comes with is quite a bit weaker. It has the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 TI. This is by no means a bad GPU, it is just not as powerful. If you are looking for something a little more budget friendly then the Acer Predator is a good choice. My advice is to try to get as good of a GPU and CPU that you can. RAM is not so important as long as it is DDR4, because you can upgrade that easily yourself in the future. It is much harder to get a new CPU or GPU for a laptop, if not impossible in many cases.

As with the Razer this laptop has 16 GB of RAM. This is sufficient, and although important it is not crucial as you can get more later. Overall, this laptop is a lot cheaper than the Razor which is why it is a good contender. The GPU is weaker, and there are some other differences such as a smaller SSD as well. The storage can also be mitigated by getting external storage or upgrading the SSD which is why it is not the most important thing to consider.

You should have a look at the other features of this laptop on Amazon.

4. Powerful Laptop – ROG Zephyrus M thin

The ROG Zephyrus is another gaming laptop, which offers a lot of the same qualities that are good for music production. As discussed, for the most part, you want a good CPU, good amount of RAM, and a GPU. This computer has all of those. I believe the Zephyrus is a great option and really offers a lot of bang for your buck.

It comes with the same Intel i7-9750h Hexa-Core processor as the other computers. This is the CPU of choice on most high end laptops and you really should not get anything less powerful in my opinion.

The computer also comes with an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 GPU. This is a very good GPU. If you have a great CPU and a GPU like this computer does then you should not have much trouble with resources at least. It does not get much better in a laptop. This GPU is a bit more powerful that what you get with the Razer and not quite as good as the MSI.

As with most of the other options there is 16 GB in this laptop. The selling point of this laptop compared to the MSI is its price. You can upgrade the RAM and the GPU is nearly as good as in the MSI, and it is a lot cheaper. If you are budget conscientious then this might be the laptop for you. You should really compare the other features of the laptops to see which one speaks the most to you.

5. Budget Music Production Laptop – MSI GF63

The MSI GF63 is another laptop that is well suited for music production but is also more friendly to your wallet. In terms of power, you get what you pay for, and as this is more on the lower spectrum of a mid-range laptop, it still packs a punch but not as much as some of the others on this list. The main reason for getting the MSI GF63 over any of the others would be the price.

Even though the laptop is cheaper, it still comes with the Intel i7-9750H. The CPU is very important for music production, and therefore for FL Studio. In terms of the CPU this laptop scores just as well as the laptops that are a lot more expensive.

One area where it really does not live up to the others is with the GPU, but that is not really important for FL studio anyways, so it doesn’t really matter. It is still okay for video games, but you can’t expect to be ale to play on the highest settings with the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti that it comes with.

The SSD is also a little small with just 256 GB. With a little know-how, or if you pay someone, you can always upgrade this to a larger one later. 256 GB should be enough as long as you don’t install to many other programs on the laptop, but it is on the very low end of what you should look for.

There is also only 8 GB of RAM. This is something you should look into upgrading relatively fast if you want to go with this laptop. 8 GB will get you a long way, but so many programs eat up RAM these days so if you want to multi-task effectively then you should get 16 GB.

Overall this is a great laptop at a great price point. You should check out the product page to see if there are any other aspects of the laptop that you find interesting to you.

6. Powerful laptop for FL studio – ASUS ROG Strix Scar III

Another powerful option for FL studio is the ASUS ROG Strix Scar III. You don’t need the really powerful GPU that comes in many of these laptops, but finding a machine that has all the other components without one is not so easy. You also don’t need the extremely gaming screen that this laptop has. It has a 244 Hz refresh rate, which means it is one of the better laptops for gaming in terms of screen quality.

As the other options it comes with the Intel Core i7-9750H. One of the key things to look for is a great CPU. It is difficult to stand out with the CPU these days, at least until AMD starts becoming more main stream in laptops as they have some great options now with a lot of cores. For music production you want as good of a CPU as you can get, and the more cores you can get the better, all else equal.

The GPU is the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060. You certainly don’t need a GPU as good as this for music production, but if you are interested in other things such as gaming then this is a great choice. It is also good for the longevity of the laptop as this is a rather new model. There are still a lot of laptops with GPUs that are several years old, but of course this also adds quite a bit to the total price. If it does not fit in your budget then have a look at one of the more budget friendly options.

The laptop has other really cool features that might interest you that you should check out on the product page.

What You Should be Looking

Below are some of the things you need to consider when doing your research. In order to find the best laptop for fruity loops (FL) Studio you should take the below into consideration.

What amount of storage to get for FL studio

Most laptops, unless they have a very small disk, will be able to meet the 4 GB of free disk space requirement. That being said, many cheaper notebooks only have a 128 GB SSD. If you have this little space you won’t be able to install a lot or keep many files. You probably want to get a laptop with an SSD that is at least 256 GB. That will leave you some room for other programs as well. You can always get an external hard drive that you can keep your assets on too.
Most laptops these days come with an SSD. SSDs are more expensive than hard drives but they are much faster. The performance difference with an SSD versus a regular Hard Drive can be quite significant. That being said, since Hard Drives are cheaper you also get more storage space with them. Some laptops have a combination of hard drive and SSD but often they are a bit more expensive.

What amount of RAM to get for FL studio

For mid range laptops the new standard is 8 GB of RAM. You will only find 4 GB options on low end computers. 8 GB should be enough for many tasks you might want to perform. That being said, you will find 16 GB to be better is most circumstances. RAM is quite important for the laptop to be able to smoothly handle a lot of things at the same time. Because of that there is often a significant performance increase related to getting more RAM. This performance increase is only noticeable up to a certain point, and more than 16 GB would not make much of a difference for you at this point. It is possible that 32 GB would be good for you, and you can quite easily upgrade this on most computers.
Another thing to consider is the type of RAM. You will see that there are two types of RAM, DDR3 and DDR4. DDR4 is newer. It is both faster and it uses less power. It is a lot better to get a computer with DDR4 RAM. Not only because it is better, but also because you can’t upgrade from DDR3 to DDR4. In a laptop you can usually upgrade to more amount of RAM, so if you get a computer with 8 GB of DDR4 RAM you can buy another 8 GB chip as there are usually two slots. But if you get the DDR3 kind then you will be limited to upgrading to DDR3, which will be limiting the longevity of the computer.
In addition to considering what is the best laptop for FL Studio, you also have to consider how long you want to keep the computer. The better the parts the better for FL studio, and also the longer it is likely to last.

Should you get a GPU for FL studio

Music production is a heavy resource consuming tasks. It will stretch your CPU to its limits, and one thing you can do in order to get better performance is to have a dedicated GPU. GPUs are great for other things than just graphics. They are amazing at performing computations. Actually, if the load on your CPU is too high it can cause interference with live audio. To offset some of the load on the CPU you could take advantage of the GPU. Many mid range laptops do come with GPUs. I recommend getting a GPU in any computer that will be used for resource demanding tasks. That being said, you will be okay without one too.

What Screen Should You be Looking For when using FL studio?

Razer Blade Studio Edition 2020

FL studio has a lot going on in the UI, and you want to make sure that you can comfortably see all the things. Because of that, I recommend that you at least get a 15 inch computer. There are many really good looking 13 inch computers out there but 13 inches is quite small. For productivity you should either get a 15 inch or a 17 inch. Most laptops these days come with full HD screen and you don’t need anything better than that. Uunless you play video games or do video editing a Full HD option will be more than good enough. Just make sure you take the screen size into consideration.

What CPU should you get for FL studio

You will notice that most computers either have an 8th generation or a 9th generation Intel CPU. Some low end notebooks also have 7th gen versions. I recommend that you get an i7 that is either an 8th or a 9th generation. As the official requirements state, the better the CPU the better FL studio will run. A 9th gen i7 will pretty much be as good as it gets for a computer. The CPU is the brain of the computer and you don’t want to skimp on this. That being said, if you are looking for a cheaper option then you will be okay with an 8th gen too. I would recommend that you stick with an i7 model though.

Alternative to a laptop for FL studio

Laptops can sometimes be a bit on the expensive side. I want to also advice you to think about building your own desktop computer. You will be able to get more power and spend less money doing so. It will also last you longer as you can more easily upgrade the individual components.

Of course, a desktop comes with its own setbacks, such as you are not able to bring it around. If you are in college still then this might be a big deal breaker for you. But if you are looking for the most bang for your buck then you might want to consider going with a custom build desktop instead of a laptop. Even a ready made desktop can give you at least more power than what a lot of laptops will.

Razer blade studio edition 2020

This way you can also more easily chose to not have a good GPU as well. It is much more difficult to find the right laptop with the right parts than picking the parts and putting it together yourself.

Final Comments on Laptops for Music Production

Music production is very resource intensive task and you need a laptop that has the parts to match. That being said, that does not mean that you have to have the latest and greatest.
